I think I kind of get it.
Honestly, a lot of metal is boring when it tries to be heavy. Too much metal has very little sense of groove and you get a feeling the musicians involved would not be able to jam together very coherently if asked to.
There are so many bands that rise above this though.
While I find most supposedly great black, death and thrash metal acts to be downright boring, there's so many bands that forge their own path into awesome sounding territory that I still end up calling myself a massive metal fan, even if I don't care about most of the canon.
