^ I've never heard this myself, but if that's a popular solution, why fight it? It's not so different from (after centuries of Mr./ Mrs./Miss only) the less specific term Ms. was introduced. I imagine that ze/zer is mainly for conversational purposes at the moment. My guess is that in medical documents, etc, people are still writing out he/she when the need arises.
