It's weird, isn't it? It's like they have this crazy idea that the retailer thinks "Oh no! If I don't give this guy/girl/undecided a special discount they'll leave!" Who the **** cares? You're talking most likely about a place that does thousands of sales a day. They're not going to be hurt by the loss of your business, and they're certainly not going to try to keep it by giving you preferential treatment.
I guess it would be fun to try it just once, to see the reaction: "This washing powder is three euro, hmm? Tell you what: I'll give you two-fifty, now I can't say fairer than that, can I?" Meanwhile, there are angry rumblings from the line of people behind you...
