In the group stage it's eight groups of four teams, three matches each. 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 if you lose. The two teams with the most points after the three games proceed to knockouts.
In the knockout stage if it's a draw after 90 minutes there is extra time (30 minutes) and if it's a draw after extra time then it's a penalty shoot out.
We aren't in the knockout stage yet. We are in the final round of group games.

Group Stage is just like “regular season” and American sports are organized in a similar way. We have an obsession against ties buy American football overtime boils down to just luck.
Soccer fans understand that one point for a draw in group play is reasonable at that stage in the tournament. And in fact the NFL does accept ties in the regular season after 15 minutes of overtime. And they change the damn rules ever year.
