For me, the biggest issue with prog is that it’s often better on paper than in practice. Talented musicians playing complex, enveloping-pushing music? Sign me up! Unfortunately, a lot of it ends up being kind of meh—too staid, too attached to rock conventions, and too often saddled with lame vocals.
That said, just yesterday I gave Yes’ Fragile another listen after many years and found that I liked it a lot more than I used to. So I think I’m in a frame of mind to have my opinion changed.
