Actually in an ironic kind of way at the moment No 2 in the British singles chart is Orson , and American 'indie' band that have done f*ck all in their own country.Following a long tradition of American acts coming to the UK to get noticed first because their own country doesn`t (Hendrix , Pixies , Pavement , White Stripes etc etc)

I know what you mean, promoting
good music is much more dificult in the US, but that dosent paticularly mean there are more good UK bands than US bands.
