that something different like I said is the extra step of converting characters into words in your mind. It's not magic.

If you copied the book down by hand as you read it you would remember it much better. That's the same reason that teachers stress you take notes rather than just read the slide show. Even if you never go back over the notes, just writing them down makes you remember more. Once again cause you're spending more time on each word.

This can be overcome with audiobooks by relistening multiple times to the same portion.
