We are all still interacting with our culture as if we were living in a true aristocracy. Humanity has lived in aristocracies of one form or another for thousands of years. We're just not as aware of it anymore.

Yeh but that still doesn't mean I'm hypocritical for making fun of the romanticizing of the poor and elph's peacocking simultaneously.

The association of intelligence and culture with the rich is deeply ingrained but no longer accurate. That doesn't mean anyone who seeks the former is merely using it as a means to obtain the latter.

that something different like I said is the extra step of converting characters into words in your mind. It's not magic.

If you copied the book down by hand as you read it you would remember it much better. That's the same reason that teachers stress you take notes rather than just read the slide show. Even if you never go back over the notes, just writing them down makes you remember more. Once again cause you're spending more time on each word.

This can be overcome with audiobooks by relistening multiple times to the same portion.

When I end up in a conversation with a rich person it usually takes me about five minutes to make sure they know I’m far more well-read and travelled than they are. I'm also quick to note that military travel doesn’t count and neither do business trips where all you did was go to a ****ing conference.
