You could argue to a large extent the first gulf war was us intervening on behalf of the Saudis, who were increasingly nervous about Saddam's antics.

Likewise we only ever supported Saddam as a counterweight to the Iranians, who we lost favor with.

The whole region has been a tinderbox of volatile alliances and rivalries since the borders were haphazardly drawn up by the allies after ww1. So if you wanna talk about interconnectedness.. you could make a very counter intuitive case that ww3 started in 1914.
