I mean there's a definite connection between the first gulf war and the 2nd and between the 2nd and where we are now, but I wouldn't frame that as ww3. Maybe what will lead up to it. But there was **** before the gulf war that lead to that as well. E.g. our failed puppet state in Iran being over thrown, and the jockeying for power between the Saudis, Iraq and Iran.

You could argue to a large extent the first gulf war was us intervening on behalf of the Saudis, who were increasingly nervous about Saddam's antics.

Likewise we only ever supported Saddam as a counterweight to the Iranians, who we lost favor with.

The whole region has been a tinderbox of volatile alliances and rivalries since the borders were haphazardly drawn up by the allies after ww1. So if you wanna talk about interconnectedness.. you could make a very counter intuitive case that ww3 started in 1914.
