Splicing is used a lot when musicians dont want to do too many takes and they use splicing just to get it over with, it dosent always mean they can't actually play it.
Take
Comfortably Numb for example, Gilmour's solos were spliced... But anyone who has heard him play live knows very damn well he can play the solo perfectly, note for note. Though apparantly he had trouble playing it at the time of the recording, which is why they spliced different solo takes together in order to make them sound good.
Sounding good is all that matters anyway.
Perhaps Dream Theater should give Bob Ezrin a call.
