I mean technically you could make a case for people like the Greek who invented democracy (was that Pericles?) but those people don't live as a similar figure/symbol in our collective imagnation nowadays. I mean the fact that I'm not sure who I'm talking about says enough (even though it's partly due to it being 1 am here I guess)
