I think he was a pop genius obviously, on a similar level to Michael Jackson and Prince. For some reason, musicians like that, at least in the pop sphere, who write, produce and sometimes play a lot/most of the instruments on their music, don't come by any more. I can only think of Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, although obviously he hasn't achieved the same level of success as the aforementioned.
I fondly remember this song/video (one of the best pop songs and most iconic videos of all time methinks):
He went a little blah in the latter part of his career, like all of them, but his creative peaks were astonishing.
