I don't know what you mean by cope, but
you don't think that Alito citing Matthew Hale is evidence that there's a common ideal of a social order being propped up by these people?
As for the Christians then/now thing, yeah. Ok. But I don't know who was arguing that. Maybe I missed it. That seems obvious to me though. That said I live in a pretty Catholic part of the country so maybe I'm inclined to be less shocked.
