You can really take your pick with the sad/gloomy stuff. Faith is a good choice. Bloodflowers has some sad stuff that works too.

Robert's ability to write a three minute pop song is matched by few.

The band's longevity is incredible. Granted, REM got robbed of that when Bill Berry passed. Morrissey continues to put out music too.

On stage, Robert has a crazy work ethic. I remember my first time at a Cure show. When the fourth encore began, Robert seemed almost dejected. He came out and said "I guess we have time for one more". I saw them at a festival. The band went past 11, which is a bylaw no-no. After getting their plug pulled, the band finished the song while the crowd helped out.
Robbed of that? As an Up megafan and a general fan of REM's post Berry material, I take umbrage with that.
