That's a good question. I'd be inclined to put The Cure at #1.

Robert Smith can write just about any kind of song, and do it with hooks galore.

Pissed off after a breakup? Listen to Fascination Street. That bass line will live rent free in your head for days.

Need a happy song to jump around to? Friday I'm in love works just fine.

Want to jazz things up? Put on The Lovecats.

Sad? Take your pick. Robert is the king of sad and depressed songs.

I hear the way he sings, and it sounds like he's pouring in tons of emotion.

Good explanation. And you're spot on with Fascination Street. What a fantastic song. Disintegration is a masterwork.

If I'm really depressed, Faith has always been my favorite.

Fascination Street is my favourite song from them.

You can really take your pick with the sad/gloomy stuff. Faith is a good choice. Bloodflowers has some sad stuff that works too.

Robert's ability to write a three minute pop song is matched by few.

The band's longevity is incredible. Granted, REM got robbed of that when Bill Berry passed. Morrissey continues to put out music too.

On stage, Robert has a crazy work ethic. I remember my first time at a Cure show. When the fourth encore began, Robert seemed almost dejected. He came out and said "I guess we have time for one more". I saw them at a festival. The band went past 11, which is a bylaw no-no. After getting their plug pulled, the band finished the song while the crowd helped out.

Robbed of that? As an Up megafan and a general fan of REM's post Berry material, I take umbrage with that.

I love both, I do prefer the Smiths but I also hate Morrissey as a human being and he has the worst fanbase on the planet so I'm tempted to vote for REM purely out of spite, decisions decisions.

Since the beginning, the liner notes of every REM album listed Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe as the writers. When he left, the band remained, but wasn't the same. It would have been the same had Rush continued on without Peart. I'm sure they would still have been good, but there would be something missing.

Robert was the constant in an ever changing lineup. He's outlasted many of his peers.

I own Up, Reveal and Accelerate. I like each one of them.

The Smiths definitely, I love REM but The Queen is Dead is a top 10 album for me.

Agreed with this, **** Morrisey and some of his delusional fans on the likes of twitter and facebook.
