If you have ever read Nick Hornby's book 31 Songs he has a theory to this.
His idea is that metal is easy for teens to get into because the fact that it's loud & aggressive means that it's easy to distinguish if something is bad or good , based on how heavy it is , or how fast the guitarist or drummer is.
With other genres of music like folk or country you don't have this automatic guide to what is good or bad and so you have to work out what is good or bad based on things like songwriting , originality & talent rather than just how fast or loud or how much 'it rocks'.
And before I get flamed by metalheads ... it's not my theory.
