Post punk covers such a wide canvas. Basically it's a bunch of bands that were inspired by punk but used loads of other influnces as well as that rather than going down the 3 chord shouty vocals route.

Bands like Bauhaus , Alien Sex Fiend , The Cramps & Southern Death Cult went down the gothic route.

There are bands like The Cure , Joy Division , Talking Heads , XTC , Echo & The Bunnymen , The Smiths , Comsat Angels , A Certain Ratio ,The Shop Assistants , Magazine , The Assosciates , Scritti Politti , Durutti Column , who all have varying degrees of an obvious punk influence but who focused more on songwriting rather than speed & aggression.

You also have bands that were closer to how punk sounded but were more cerebral or experimental in their approach such as Husker Du , Mission Of Burma , The Gun Club , Wire , The Swell Maps , The Pop Group ,The Fall , The Raincoats , The Birthday Party , The Slits, Television Personalities ,Half Man Half Biscuit , Crass & The Replacements.

You could also include the No Wave scene that was happening in New York with Bands like Sonic Youth , The Contortions , Lydia Lunch , Teenage Jesus & The Jerks , MARS.

And then there's the electronic aspect of it coming from bands like Suicide , Throbbing Gristle , Public Image LTD , Clock DVA , The Human League (early on) , Psychic TV , The Normal , Foetus , & Cabaret Voltaire.

I could throw in a sh*t load of other bands but i'll be here all day , but thats a rough guide.
