Give an example of Post-punk there, would you please? I'm afraid I get a little lost in the garbled mass that is music genre from time to time...

Post punk covers such a wide canvas. Basically it's a bunch of bands that were inspired by punk but used loads of other influnces as well as that rather than going down the 3 chord shouty vocals route.

Bands like Bauhaus , Alien Sex Fiend , The Cramps & Southern Death Cult went down the gothic route.

There are bands like The Cure , Joy Division , Talking Heads , XTC , Echo & The Bunnymen , The Smiths , Comsat Angels , A Certain Ratio ,The Shop Assistants , Magazine , The Assosciates , Scritti Politti , Durutti Column , who all have varying degrees of an obvious punk influence but who focused more on songwriting rather than speed & aggression.

You also have bands that were closer to how punk sounded but were more cerebral or experimental in their approach such as Husker Du , Mission Of Burma , The Gun Club , Wire , The Swell Maps , The Pop Group ,The Fall , The Raincoats , The Birthday Party , The Slits, Television Personalities ,Half Man Half Biscuit , Crass & The Replacements.

You could also include the No Wave scene that was happening in New York with Bands like Sonic Youth , The Contortions , Lydia Lunch , Teenage Jesus & The Jerks , MARS.

And then there's the electronic aspect of it coming from bands like Suicide , Throbbing Gristle , Public Image LTD , Clock DVA , The Human League (early on) , Psychic TV , The Normal , Foetus , & Cabaret Voltaire.

I could throw in a sh*t load of other bands but i'll be here all day , but thats a rough guide.

KoRn
Linkin Park
Disturbed
Nickleback
Hinder
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Fall Out Boy
Panic! At the Disco
And as much as I absolutely love The Beatles, they are a bit overrated.

In order to be overrated bands have to be rated highly in the first place.

Not necessarily. A band can absolutely suck, yet loads of people love them (overrated). Then there are bands that are musical geniuses but people ignore them because they like something simple and dumb down (underrated).

Of course, what people consider overrated is mostly their opinion and not some universal truth.

For example;

KoR- Catchy, but too many people think they are so heavy and metal.
Linkin Park- Can only stand their first album, Hybrid Theory, and the rest is just dead sound to me.
Disturbed- My favorite band of all time, yet I can see why people can hate them.
Nickleback- 3 seconds into one of their songs that someone had on their MYSpace, and I paused it. Arrogant, yes, but I got with my instincts and this three seconds of listening told me "This band is a waste of time."
Hinder-never heard of them
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus- never heard of them
Fall Out Boy-Heard of them, and regret hearing them.
Panic! At the Disco- not sure if I heard them or not.
The Beatles- BIG disappointment. Everyones all "THE BEATLES WERE A GREAT BAND!" I just didn't get it. Sounded boring and too easy-sounding for me. Not saying they suck, though, but I was just let down when I heard them.

Sometimes I think we're over critical of the bands that really only had people like Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly as influences. A lot of us look back with nigh on 50 years of materialistic hindsight and say "The Beatles weren't that special".

Do these same people call Henry Ford a loser because his Model T only had 20hp?

Good points.

Though, for the type of music the Beatles wrote, they more than stand the test of time. It would be hard to deny the genius of their melodies and song arrangements and above all, their remarkable consistency. It would also be hard to argue that for what they did, they've been surpassed.
