1. King Crimson is not more critically acclaimed than RATM, nice try.
2. Longetivity isn't really too good of a criteria. Think of how long Toto have been around and compare that to Jimi Hendrix.
3. King Crimson were not the first to use Mellotron. The Moody Blues had used one on their 1967 album Days Of Future Past, Pink Floyd used one in Saucerful of Secrets and The Kinks used one prominately in The Kinks Are Village Green Preservation Society. And of course The Beatles made famous use of it in Strawberry Fields Forwever.
King Crimson simply made the instrument a progressive rock staple.
I still think KC > RATM though, I just don't like the criteria.
