I think you are confusing 'appreciate and acknowledge thier artistic efforts' with 'latch onto those sort of themes'. Godsmack isn't a theme, it's not an image. I've only ever seen one person in my school wearing a godsmack shirt, and he doesn't even really listen to Godsmack it's just a t-shirt he owns.

Angst ridden teens can relate to Godsmack songs wich is why they like them, but they don't use Godsmack as some social badge like people do with pop and rap. They genuinely appreciate Godsmack.
