I'm a big fan of the Dead myself. Dark Star is one of their more challenging songs and they've never played it the same way twice.

Among Deadheads there is a constant debate over which version of Dark Star is their best and since the Dead taped every one of their live shows there's hundreds of versions of Dark Star floating around out there, especially since the Dead began releasing many of their live shows in the D*ck's Picks series.

My own personal favorite version of Dark Star is from 10/31/71 concert in Columbus Ohio and it appears on D*ck's Picks Volume 2 on Grateful Dead Records (1995).

I rarely review records that I dislike because it's such a joyless chore to sit and listen to the entirety of a bad album and then devote an hour or two writing a negative review of an album that has no redeeming musical qualities. Life's too short to spend it listening and writing about music that makes you want to hurl.

Anyone who reviews music will tell you the same thing. Nearly any music critic would rather be assigned to review an album or concert by a musician they enjoy, rather than do a nasty hit job on a lame performer.

Inevitably it's the duty of any ethical journalist to unmask some of the more egregiously fraudulent performers but lightweight song "stylists" like Celine Dion and Jessica Simpson are so manifestly lame they're not even worth the effort.

I won't name names, but there are dozens of mediocre but highly successful bands that are marketed as "alternative" that are patently offensive. Those alternative musical charlatans deserve a good flogging for their lack of imagination. Celine and Jessica are such easy targets, they aren't worth the attention.

NOTE: So you can't you use the name "D*ck" without being censored by the godawful profanity filter?
