To call Dream Theater untalented means you have to view talent as being completely subjective. And me personally, I think there's certain kinds of talent that can be objectified.

I don't know if hatching out a melody that some people will just happen to like makes you talented. Because I could start the most crappy avant garde band you've ever seen, right now, and all I do is fart through a talk box for 50 minutes and I could gain a following. Pitchfork would give me rave reviews and call me the next Glenn Branca.

Musicians work really hard to work their way up to the kind of skill level that Petruccii, Portnoy, Myung and Rudess have. They spent many years of practice to be as good as they are and I don't think any musician does that just for money or to impress people, it takes a lot of time, effort, care, devotion and understanding of music. And thus no matter how much I hate Dream Theater's music (I hate it very much), they worked damn hard to get where they are, and if they enjoy what they do and take pride in it, and it touches people in the same way music touches the rest of us, then that's all that really matters.
I get what your saying but a lot of the avant garde artists are really talented technically and in the sense that they have amazing ideas and levels of creativity. So I dont think 'farting through a talk box' will actually get you anywhere & Ive heard some weird stuff.

If you want some weird stuff ???? you should check out a band called King Missile (they have several incarnations I, II & III) - all of which are, let me put it, different.

Avant Garde & Jazz is probably the two most exciting genres in music for me as you tend to find with Rock that its really predictable, like alot of the time when I hear a song for the first time I can predict the next lyric or part of the song (as Im listening to it) before I even hear it.

Thats probably why I got into metal in the first place- as I got bored of the more simpler forms of Rock.

As for Dream Theatre's music, I couldnt say I hated it as such, I just think its pretty crap (but cant deny there technical ability) & people who say there the best metal band are talking balls; but there entitled to their opinion at the end of the day; after all if these people didnt exist then there would be nothing to talk about.
Just think how boring it would be if everybody agreed on all aspects of music.

I know they dont really sound alike (Gillan + Coverdale) but for some reason I always get the names mixed up...(dont ask why).
Look im not knocking the guys talent, just Id rather listen to David Coverdale/Whitesnake than a rip off of the exact same thing...

As for the hearing aid, I've not reached that age yet, good luck to you if you have though (dont forget to turn it up) .
