that's cuz thats not their best stuff. most metallica haters like you have only heard a few ultra-popular songs by them that arent that great. listen to songs from kill 'em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, ...and justice for all.
btw, file sharing still exists and it is very easy. napster was one of many sources for downloading music. i dont see why people have to hate metallica when they can still get illegal music for free.
