I'd judge a band when they were at their peak, not when they withering away. It's too easy and fashionable to hate >90s Metallica.

I agree, I haven't heard anyone here mention anything about Kill Em All. Anestesia was one of the best bass solos that Cliff Burton ever did. Does anyone remember Whiplash? That song f#@king rocked! Or what about Ride the Lightning? Fade to Black, anyone remember that? You can't judge Metallica by what they did in the 90's. They came out in 83 for Christs Sakes! I don't hate Metallica, I choose not to listen to anything after Master Of Puppets because they betrayed themselves, and their fans. They said they would never go mainstream, and never make videos. I have nothing against bands that do this, but if you say something you stick to it. They had beliefs, and when they went against what they believed, I stopped listening to anything new that they put out. I still listen to Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets because they are excellent music. And BTW, without Metallica, metal today wouldn't be the same. So hey, if you don't like them based on what they've done in the 90's, more power to ya. But I suggest at least listening to some of the older stuff before you come out saying they suck!!! Sorry I wrote so much everyone.

I agree with everything else you wrote, but this was a little odd... They didnt exactly turn mainstream, and even if you think they did, I doubt it was out of choice. Didnt you say before in another thread something about "never judge music by the antics of the people who play it"? Hmm... Anyway. Not my place to judge, I just think you might be missing out on something because of this whole 'they chose to go mainstream' thing...

I wouldnt stop listening to everything after Master of Puppets just because you think they chose to go mainstream, is all. If you listen to it and still dont like it, then fair dos.

To be fair they took a hell of a lot of stick over the And Justice For All album and rightly so.
That was their first major label album & they were all over MTV , It was supposed to be the album that made them huge , but it didn`t. Maybe it was because of all the over exposure it got , but I have a feeling it was more down to the overlong boring songs & terrible production. Maybe a lot of people don`t realise this now having seen the Metallica of the 90s but they lost a hell of a lot of their fan base over that album.

that's cuz thats not their best stuff. most metallica haters like you have only heard a few ultra-popular songs by them that arent that great. listen to songs from kill 'em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, ...and justice for all.

btw, file sharing still exists and it is very easy. napster was one of many sources for downloading music. i dont see why people have to hate metallica when they can still get illegal music for free.

i remember seeing an interview with metallica on headbangers ball before and justice for all was released, and they were saying something along the lines of how they would never make a video because it takes away from the ideas of the songs. bam, next thing you know and justice for all is released and they make a video for "one". the next album-the black album, just about every song on that album had a video. Its pretty obvious their whole perception of the music and what they were trying to accomplish changed somewhere during that time period.

Metallica are excellent, right from the offset they produced a fine album 'Kill Em All' which was superb, loved 'Ride The Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' etc but as for there aftermath of the Blackened tour the produced 'Reloaded'....it was just rubbish, did'nt like that in the slightest! from then onwards they went downhill for me and for many other fans.
and i'll admit that i said to myself 'i hate Metallica now' and like a complete idiot that i was i sold my 'Live Sh!t Binge and Purge' box set...Gaaahhh!!! i want it back with a vengance! coz to be honest i loved that!
