I used to play a 1967 Gretsch Country Gentleman in my guitar playing days.

The GCG is guitar favored by folk rockers, rockabilly and country and western guitarists. Billy Zoom of X, Dave Alvin, Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Brian Setzer all play the Country Gentleman. You can get a good 50s or 60s Country Gentleman for under $3000 and the older ones are better built.

I never had any problems keeping it in tune, in fact my 1957 Telecaster slipped out of tune more often. It's a beautiful looking guitar, good neck action and a lush tone. I loved the whammy bar which was great for surf guitar effects.

You should also check out the Rickenbaker 360 line of guitars, which sell for a little bit more than the equivalent Gretsch guitars but that was my favorite guitar of all of them. I've heard that the new 360 line is not nearly as good as the 60s and 70s 360 models.
