I think Lennon was musically the weakest. He just didn't have the same understanding of composition that Paul and George had. While a great lyricist and charismatic singer, unaided by a more knowledgeable musician, his compositions were often harmonically and melodically simple to the point of inspiring boredom.

Rubber Soul is easily my favorite Beatles album. It showcases them when they're just starting to get experimental but still a totally rocking pop band. It's truly the best of both worlds.
