Not necessarily in order:

1) A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
Their other albums are more critically acclaimed and have more head-nodding. But this is the one that turned me on to rap back in the day. It speaks.

2) Vaudeville Villain by Viktor Vaughn (MF DOOM) - Probably my favorite rap album ever. Irresistable.

3) Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu Tang Clan. Simply essential. Inventive and intriguing beyond all expectations.

4) Deltron 3030. Maybe the epitome of pure hip hop - every element is on spot.

5) The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox. You will feel this one deep in your soul. It's got a good, devious flow with the perfect beats for off kilter smart, demented rhymes.
