Really, no one has named a bad album, but I don't know about some of these for starting off with.

Thanks for all the new suggestions.

So far from this thread I have got:

Aesop Rock - Illmatic
Beastie Boys - Paul's Botique
Nas - Illmatic
Wu-Tnag Clan - 36 Chambers
Common - Be
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Maraders

Out of all of them, the only two so far that I can say I really enjoyed were the Aesop Rock and ATCQ albums. Aesop just seems leeps and bounds ahead in terms of the intelect of his lyrics and the speed he delivers them with, meanwhile ATCQ just seems to flow straight off the cuff, slow, perfect rythm and catchy.

Just to poke my head in, NaS does Illmatic, not Aesop Rock. And in all my listens I haven't been that fond of Illmatic. Now Stillmatic? That's some hotstuff.

Edit: Oh i think you just got the wrong album name you already got NaS down.

You're going to respect Aesop Rock longer than anyone else for a long, long time. Aesop Rock is one of the best rappers of all-time. If you liked Labor Days, make sure you check out Aceyalone's All Balls Don't Bounce. Aceyalone and Aesop Rock both live in these fucked up and super-interesting, creative worlds.

I'm actually pretty surprised you didn't really dig Common's Be or Illmatic. Of course you're not going to like 36 Chambers for a long time, it's tough to get into. Beastie Boys are great, but they might take a while to get into if you didn't grow up on them.

Take a little more time with Common and Illmatic. Don't come back to Wu-Tang or Beatie Boys for a while. Make sure you get around to Aceyalone, he was definitely a big influence on Aesop Rock. Get some more A Tribe Called Quest.

Man I love Paul's Boutique myself. The Boys are just fun to listen to but if you can't get into them then the sampling by the Dust Brothers should be enough to keep you on it!

I will do, I'll download that album ASAP. I have to agree, so far Aesop has just got the edge on everything, he is just mind-bboggling. Well I have only given them one spin each so far and it was xmas, so maybe a little bit more attention will do good. I have a copy of Danger Mouse's "Grey Album" and I can safely say I have never been so bored listening to an album before in my life.

They have some cool energy going on which is pretty mad and as I said above all these asumptions were based on first listens, except for Aesop which already has about 4 spins. Got the BB's album on the spin now, round 2

Not necessarily in order:

1) A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
Their other albums are more critically acclaimed and have more head-nodding. But this is the one that turned me on to rap back in the day. It speaks.

2) Vaudeville Villain by Viktor Vaughn (MF DOOM) - Probably my favorite rap album ever. Irresistable.

3) Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu Tang Clan. Simply essential. Inventive and intriguing beyond all expectations.

4) Deltron 3030. Maybe the epitome of pure hip hop - every element is on spot.

5) The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox. You will feel this one deep in your soul. It's got a good, devious flow with the perfect beats for off kilter smart, demented rhymes.

Thats just so wrong dude, dont get me wrong stillmatic is a decent if not good album. But illmatic is just too good. Nas flow on that album is right up there with Biggie, the poetry and storytelling are the best ever heard on a hip hop album and the beats are just superb.

It is without a shadow of a doubt the best hip hop album ever made and quite possibly the best album ever.

Illmatic
