Back across the bridge in the photo was a war cemetery for the commonwealth and allied soldiers who had died constructing the railway under appalling conditions at the hands of the Japanese.
The Thai people looked after the cemetery and to their credit it was pristine.
The only occasion that spoilt my trip across south east asia was the Japanese tourists trampling all over the place, seemingly unaware of the barbaric treatment their soldiers meted out to the prisoners.
Imagine German tourists chatting excitedly and taking endless photos on a day trip out to Auschwitz and you get the picture.
