This is an interesting question I like to think all popular bands and artists have some sort of appeal - which explains their popularity. Whether you like them or not depends on whether or not you are able to tap into that appeal.

I actually like a lot of music that perhaps didn't appeal very much on the first listen. It took a bit more before I was able to really see what the appeal was. Since ELP is on this list, their 1971 album Tarkus is a perfect example. The 20 minutes long title track's attraction is not as immediate as that of most popular music, but if you can tap into it, you might end up loving it.
Tarkus is a better piece of music than anything that ever came out of the punk rock movement, and I like punk.

You still haven't answered my question on what overindulgent crap even is and why Trout Mask Replica doesn't qualify.

I know those bands suck, but it's out of mediocrity, not misdirected talent.
So, even if a band is incredibly talented, just because they make music that isn't consistant with your particular brand of taste makes them the second worst band of all time?

Yeah, that is just stupid on so many levels. Even Yngwie Malmsteen, I don't dig his music too much, but to call him one of the worst musicians of all time when he's a hero to many talented musicians is just absolutely juvenile and offensive to me.

As for Asia, like I said earlier I'm not really a fan, they make watered down arena rock that isn't consistant with what I know they are capable of or the super proggy Roger Dean art. But that doesn't change the fact that they are all incredibly talented individuals who have produced brilliant music with three of the greatest bands ever (including one that is very high on this list), they are more talented instrumentalists than most people will ever be and most of the bands I actually do like, so for that I give them respect.

It's funny that you call them overindulgent though, because I think they are waaaaaaaaaaaay too restrained. It's as if they all have electric shock collars that go off whenever they do something that is too out there or too complex for mainstream appeal and these are musicians who are at their best when doing exactly that. For album covers that are so surreal and alien looking, the actual music is pretty standard pop stuff.

Still, I admire every single member of this band, even though I don't like the direction they took with Asia, a lot of people do and they still have a loyal following, so what the hell do I know? And Cartman likes them which is good enough for me.

There might be some glaring flaws with this list, but the prevailing bitch that lists like these are bad because "band X deserves to be on this list more than band Y" is as unimaginative as it is dull-witted. Do you really believe that everybody hates the same fifty artists, or that a list like that would make for a good conversation? I don't agree with a lot of the artists on this list, it doesn't make my opinion any more "right" than anyone else's and it surely doesn't justify me bitching about how bad it is.
Oh yeah, and you're telling me that YOU have never ranted about someone's subjective musical opinions before? This website is called music banter for a reason, that is what we do, and you're more guilty of it than most.
