What? Just because people smoke doesn't mean that you can't smell gas! That's one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. Of course the sense of smell is diminished by smoking but you aren't completely numbed by it and gas has it's own particular odour that is immediately noticeable even if you are blind drunk! Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a different matter altogether as it's virtually odourless but if it was pure gas then that is an outrageous statement.
Was it pure gas or Carbon Monoxide? if it was the latter then no one is at fault apart from the engineers or manufacturers of the appliances.
