That's only my opinion of their early work though, Raw Power is excellent, James Williamson definitely kicked things up a notch.

Most of Tull's albums from the late 80's onwards have had their fair share of Dire Straits about them. The Stooges were just a Rock N Roll band and played rowdy Rock you can get drunk to and kick back and yes I am a Tull fan before you start.
