I would think that Pop/Dance is one of the more popular genre's with the younger generation and the music of today if considering artist like Lady Gaga, etc.
And to be honest, I have no ideal what are some of the more popular Rock/Metal bands of the current music scene, so.. Im glad that you took the time to redirect the question Satchmo.
I find that the (history) genealogy of musical genre's are the most interesting subject to me personally, but I am at a complete loss as to who are some of the more popular bands within today's music scene, let alone some of the more popular genre's.
And as for the 90s, I will suggest that the 'Red,Hot,Chili Peppers', and a few other bands/artist played a major role in the development of Funk Rock as a more 'authentic genre' in the 90s, of course this is only of my opinion.
