I think we can restructure this question to make it a little more relevant, and to give this thread some semblance of purpose and ask if there is a contemporary genre of music that is the most honestly reflective of where we are right now in history.

Retrospectively, this has been harder and harder to ascertain as contemporary music has progressed through time. I still scratch my head and wonder how anyone finds anything distinctly authentic about 90's music, something that speaks of the cultural zeitgeist of the time, but like all previous decades, people get a case of the good ol' days about ten years after the respective period has been over and end up finding something interesting, relevant, and arguably original regardless.

I would think that Pop/Dance is one of the more popular genre's with the younger generation and the music of today if considering artist like Lady Gaga, etc.
And to be honest, I have no ideal what are some of the more popular Rock/Metal bands of the current music scene, so.. Im glad that you took the time to redirect the question Satchmo.
I find that the (history) genealogy of musical genre's are the most interesting subject to me personally, but I am at a complete loss as to who are some of the more popular bands within today's music scene, let alone some of the more popular genre's.
And as for the 90s, I will suggest that the 'Red,Hot,Chili Peppers', and a few other bands/artist played a major role in the development of Funk Rock as a more 'authentic genre' in the 90s, of course this is only of my opinion.

I definitely see the funk rock/metal genre as being something that was more original to the 90's decade than anything, especially grunge, which was more of a marketing thing and a fleeting fashion trend. There were a lot of good funk metal bands that came out of the 90's (Infectious Grooves, Mordred, 24-7 Spy) that no one really gives a **** about today (try searching for a thread on here for any one of those bands). It wasn't because any one of them sucked, rather it's because they were never quite flavor-of-the-month with media.

I don't think there will ever be a dominant genre, especially with the way music is selling now.
