I agree. People make the mistake of thinking that mass consumerism = conformity, and that their little niche tastes are therefore anti-conformity. But it's all part of capitalism; just another side of the same coin, and anti-conformity is one of biggest movements in capitalism. Nobody admits to being a cog in the machine, a conformist, as it makes you sound like an idiot. So people look for things that will set them apart from others.

Their little sub genre style only remains exclusive until lots of people cop on to the fact and join in, which ignites an arms race where everyone is chasing new styles and tastes to set themselves apart; distinction-seeking. This is a never ending spiral.
