It's not like there was anything mediocre about it, it's just his whole approach to movie-making that I don't really like. It seems like in his later films he really substitutes substance for image and style. Not only that, but his stuff is so stylized that it makes me feel like I'm watching a girl after a face lift, a boob job, liposuction, etc. It just seems extremely fake, which also diminishes the impact of the actual story.
Basically I like style in a movie when it complements the storyline. Tarantino doesn't do that in my opinion.
