Right, do you know why KRS-One vs. MC Shan was such a big deal? Because it was the first rap battle where the victory was more about who dissed who harder, not about who could get the crowd more hyped; before the Bridge Wars, hip hop was a lot more party-based than battle-equipped, and it was originally about the DJ, not the rapper.

Hip hop didn't get its start and build its foundation on fanciful bravado and battle rhymes. That has certainly become an aspect of the culture, and it's a good thing, and I would argue that it was an inevitable evolution. I do not like when people bitch about brag rap.
