Random Access Memories (Daft Punk) – A modern classic or just overhyped nostalgia?

I’ve been revisiting Random Access Memories lately, and I’m honestly torn between calling it a masterpiece and questioning how much of its reputation comes from timing and nostalgia.

From a production standpoint, it’s almost flawless. The attention to detail, the analog recording approach, the musicianship—it feels like a love letter to an older era of music, especially disco, funk, and late 70s/early 80s studio craftsmanship.

Tracks like Giorgio by Moroder and Touch still feel incredibly ambitious, while Get Lucky became one of those songs that almost defined an entire year.

But here’s where I struggle a bit:
Does the album really hold up as a cohesive listening experience today?

Some tracks feel more like showcases of style rather than essential pieces of a greater whole. And while the album is sonically rich, I sometimes wonder if it lacks the emotional punch that keeps you coming back repeatedly.

That said, it’s hard to deny its influence. You can hear its impact on how modern pop and electronic music started embracing more organic, live instrumentation again.

A few questions for you all:

Do you still listen to this album front-to-back, or just specific tracks?
Has it aged well compared to other albums from the same era?
Do you consider it Daft Punk’s best work, or does Discovery still take that spot?

I’m just getting into Daft Punk a bit more, so I was curious to hear what other members think about their music and where a good place to start would be. They seem to have had a huge influence on electronic music, so I thought it would be interesting to ask here.

I really like their first album, from the mid-90s. Really really cool, brilliant hard-edged electronica.

They kinda went more commercial after that though obviously you can still find good tracks here and there. This is one I always liked
