user reputation system

i'm on a few forums that have it,so, i thought it would be cool if we could have one too, it would add another dimension to foruming.....what say the all powerful admins?

right-track 02-18-2006 05:54 PM

I'm unfamiliar with this user reputation system.
How does it work and can you give examples?

adidasss 02-18-2006 05:59 PM

basically, on the top right corner of every post you would have an option to either aprove or disaprove of a post, when you click on the button, a little box pops up and you can leave a comment too......so when you aprove, you give reputation points to the poster, when you disaprove, you give negative points lowering his reputation score......and the way you can see how much rep some has is you have green little lights in the top right corner....

sleepy jack 02-18-2006 06:01 PM

I see one huge flaw with that, certain users hold grudges with other users. Whats to stop them from just constantly disapproving the posts? Other then that it seems like a good idea.

gregb 02-18-2006 06:12 PM

I see it diminishing into a popularity contest.

adidasss 02-18-2006 06:18 PM

but that's the fun!!!.....haha....

EDGE 02-18-2006 06:18 PM

^ yes.

but it would still be neat.
:)

Mama Booze 02-18-2006 06:29 PM

I would have like negative 10,000 reputation lmao

But what the hell sounds fun.

HAHA, but honestly. The way I see it would just another form of forum eltism "oh look! he has 12 negatives lets all immeditly assume hes a bad person before actually getting to know him or read his posts!" Elitism sucks, I see no need for creating another source for us to judge people off, having post counts is bad enough.

ahh gerg, but as an admin, you can give yourself max rep right away.....so everyone will have the illusion that you are loved and respected.....:)

i think it will be a positive influence on the posting climate, people will make more quality posts in hopes of someone giving them good rep and be more careful of making bad posts for fear of neg rep...you can set it so that you can only give one rep point to the same person, avoid preferential treatment....

While that is true for some members, but alot of people hold grudges and alot of people favor some equal to the grudges. They'd start handing out postives/negatives to whatever petty reasons, not the actual post.

i think you're getting way ahead of yourself....you have no way of knowing that people will act that way...i personally don't think they will......in any case, in order to get lots of good rep or bad rep a lot of people would have to rep you, so if one person does abuse the system...it will not have a great effect...

sleepy jack 02-18-2006 06:41 PM

I think they will act that way, while not everyone will and probaly the majority wont. I can name a select group of users pick at eachother constantly and they would abuse it. But the amount of members who wouldn't do it, outweights the amount that would abuse it.

adidasss 02-18-2006 06:43 PM

so it's all good.....

EDGE 02-18-2006 06:45 PM

what if only the mods could do this?

adidasss 02-18-2006 06:47 PM

em..noooo.....

mosesandtherubberducky 02-18-2006 06:48 PM

Is it possible to make my post count count into the negatives instead of the positives?

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-18-2006 06:49 PM

I`m all for more ways of making Adidasss know he`s a tosser :)

adidasss 02-18-2006 06:52 PM

hurraaaay!! well if richard is backing the idea...i don't see how greg can deny us of this......really don't see how......really......don't.........

you're gonna say no aren't you greg?

i actually completely agree with you. i can name a few people that are like that on this forum and others. i don't think it would be fair to the people that will probably get things held on them, it wouldn't be fair for us to let it happen, and then nothing more then liekly would be done about it, it would then turn into a populaity thing.. as it would get harder and harder for this thing to work in the long wrong. it might be fun, but also hurtful to some. i don't think its a good idea.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 02-19-2006 12:18 AM

as far as i know....only the mods can "approve" or "disapprove" posts. but....i think greg has that whole system disabled.

adidasss 02-19-2006 02:09 AM

em, i think it's not even installed perfection, and that's not the kind of aprove or disaprove i'm talking about....

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 02-19-2006 11:14 AM

well...im just going by what i see...theres a little dropdown after the last post on every page, and two of the options are "approve posts" and "unapprove posts". it probably isnt what youre talking about, but whatever....

hiu 02-19-2006 03:59 PM

Rep systems don't work especially on a site this size.

adidasss 02-19-2006 04:03 PM

i beg to differ, the movie forum i'm on is approximately the same size as this forum, and it works just fine.....i see no harm in it, and it would definetly bring something new to the place, new and fun....

hiu 02-19-2006 04:06 PM

I don't feel rep whoring posts bring something good to the site.

adidasss 02-19-2006 04:18 PM

that might be the most illogical statement made on this site ( and that's saying something ). you somehow figure that people will reward retarded posts and leave the really good ones ( for example, when someone makes a thread about a band and you get to like the band , or someone makes a funny post ) unrewarded? post whoring will not neccessarily mean lots of good rep, in fact, i would venture a guess that it will only piss people off into giving you bad rep....

hiu 02-19-2006 08:14 PM

Yes, I have seen it happen. Rep really isn't going to be about rewarding great posts soon enough but about trading rep with your favourite "e-friends" so you can look great with your stars under your name. Don't deny the fact that this won't happen as it was on mx for a quite a while and really has no purpose other than that.

hookers with machineguns 02-20-2006 10:28 AM

Don't we already have a good idea what everyone's rep is? Then again, our "forum awards" looked more like the Grammy's.

Fenixpunk 02-20-2006 10:52 AM

are you implying the votes were fixed??!! i won dammit!!! i won fair and square!!!!

riseagainstrocks 02-20-2006 01:05 PM

I vote no for the reasons given.

we are not all a happy family here.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

on that note, this year (awards to be presented June 25th) I'm setting up something different, so it's more open. No worries!

i'm not sure i'm following, you're saying that it would be abused? how so? i think i explained to ethan that the chances of that happening are slim....besides, the admin can give more rep power to those who have been here longer and already have somewhat of a good reputation, and as far as i know, none of those people are childish or retarded.....

riseagainstrocks 02-20-2006 01:21 PM

^ It would be abused. Simply think logically about it. We have roughly 20-30 regular regulars. And almost half of aren't exactly non-abrasive. It would be abused. Plain and simple. Plus, if you saw someone's post that had a low reputation level you'd already be biased of the post (speaking from a newbies perspective) it's better not to have it IMO.

em yeah ian, you've made no argument what so ever.....simply saying that it will be abused is no argument...the majority of the regular posters here are not idiots or 9....and no you wouldn't be biased of the post if someone had a low reputation score....

*sigh*

fuck me for trying to add something new here.....

I just wish people would be more honest & just say no because it involves more work

it involves clicking a few buttons for one the admins.

and adidasss, I did provide an arguement...I'm so confused.

if a majority of people want it than fine, PM gregb or IAmAlego about it. But I call right now that it will simply start more flaming.
