Possibly! I do think a bizzarely sensitive cult-dictatorship sounds kind of nice.

But I think of the debate over this suggestion of not allowing pictures that ridicule people's ideas in the music forums is more like the debate over whether YouTube videos without commentary should be allowed.

Because videos are about music and share music, I always felt posting YouTube videos alone should be fine, but I recall quite a few mods felt that people should include commentary.

If mods felt YouTube videos alone weren't desirable on a music forum, then I feel it would be consistent to encourage people to use their words rather than simply post a picture alone. Of course, what would probably happen is that people would post the picture and include words.

The basic issue is how important it is to try to make MB an even more welcoming place for sharing opinions and observations about music. Too much moderation squelches discussion, just like too much ridiculing and antagonism squelch discussion, so finding a balance is the challenge.

I remember the discussion you refer to, and I agree that it's fine--within reason. So, I think, is teasing other members who take themselves too seriously. I think taking one's self too seriously is a bigger contributor to feelings of alienation and animosity than disagreements with other people are.

EDIT: I may be perceived as the most egregious srs-biznizz offender, so I balance it by getting drunk and embarrassing myself in the shouty.

I disagree that people need to be respectful in order to receive respect.

I feel we should be respectful of people here at MB whether or not they are acting respectfully. This prevents errors such as treating well-meaning people disrespectfully, and it also gives new members a positive example to follow.
I stand behind my points because at the end of the day this guy has been offered plenty of opportunities to relax and not fight everyone.

I think if it's something that's important than you'll do it, and sooner or later you'll meet up with other people are respectful too.
That's exactly right, thank you for expanding my point.

I personally like the uncommented pictures. They often appeal to my sense of humour and have become a bit of an MB meme. I think things would get a bit dull if the practice were banned outright.
