Introductory Threads?

I've been noticing the music suggestion box has been growing with a lot of general suggestions, and there may be a solution to some of this. I was perusing the forums yesterday and came across the Jazz introductory thread, which I found to be a great tool to interpreting it as a genre. Perhaps all the genres should have introductory threads, as an accompanient to the normal education threads? It would be great if knowledgable people (i.e. not me) could take the oppotunity to introduce a genre by providing a list of notable albums to get a curious person to start listening. Maybe even provide a compilation or two to get things rolling.

I understand this is a very similar concept to the education threads that are so useful. But perhaps a thread to focus on particular albums and songs (rather than artists) might be helpful for people that want to start listening immediately.

Thoughts? Comments?

EDIT: Alright. As soon as people volunteer to cover the remaining genres, I'll have the layout up and a deadline for submission. ANYONE WHO WISHES TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION MUST VOLUNTEER TO DO SO BY AUGUST 21. This doesn't mean your thread has to be created by that time, just that you must declare your intention to create such a thread by that time. Here's the volunteers so far:

Punk : Alfred (need someone to help)
Hardcore & Emo : CAPTAIN CAVEMAN
Rock & Metal : jackhammer
Prog & Classic Rock : JayJamJah (Classic Rock) Seltzer & ProggyMan (Prog)
Rap & Hip Hop : ProggyMan
Pop : sleepy jack
Reggae & Ska : bsmix (jackhammer as back up)
Indie : sweet_nothing
Jazz & Blues : Seltzer (Jazz)
Classical : Seltzer & Sasquatch
Electronica :
Country Folk : swim (need someone to help)
Avant Garde : ProggyMan
Soul & Funk : JayJamJah (Soul) littleknowitall (Funk)
Sountracks : UberFilmBuff

Anyone wishing to contribute to an already volunteered thread should submit their names anyways. In addition, anyone who wishes only to cover only a portion of the genre need not shy away.

EDIT II: I hate to do this, but I'm going to have to set up a preliminary deadline of August 21 for myself (and thus, everyone should volunteer contributions by then). I just can't handle moving into an apartment and going back to school with managing this at the same time.

SUPREME EDIT:

This will be the official template for any introductory thread. We need them as clean and orderly as possible to attract visitors. Please note that the thread title should be "The [Genre] Introductory Thread". You can quote my post and fill in where necessary to make it easier. Please understand that if you are covering more than one MAJOR genre (i.e. Rock & Metal), you can make an introductory thread for each, but leave the sub-genres within the thread. Everything within brackets should be deleted or deleted and substituted using the instructions shown.

The deadline for submission is October 1, 2008 (giving you a month and some change to create, edit, and change the thread as desired).

The [Genre] Introductory Thread

[Insert medium-sized (250 to 350 square pixels) image here of the album cover you feel best represents the genre.]

[Brief introduction: this is a small section where you can introduce the genre and explained how it came into being, but you should be concise and succinct. One to two paragraphs should be sufficient to introduce a genre and explain what the music sounds like. We don't want to saturate the introductory threads with words so that newbies don't shy away from using them.]

The Must-Haves: [Here follows a list of eight to ten albums which you feel best represent the genre as a whole.]

[Sub-Genre] [An opportunity to provide some notable sub-genres (but please, don't take it further than a sub-genre; we don't want to hear about blackened forest pixie metal). Use common sense! Three to five albums should suffice.]
[Artist] - [Album]

[Sub-Genre 3...]

Compilations: [Here you can exercise even more control by creating a playlist of eight to ten songs. You can archive them using WinZip and upload them using Megaupload, Mediafire or similar sites. If you want to, you can make multiple compilations or compilations for each sub-genre (though that would be a lot of work).]

I'm for it.

Piss Me Off 08-11-2008 03:18 PM

A good idea, the compilation idea especially sounds good. Going to be a bit tricky with the broader forums like the indie one, but people can argue over that.

jackhammer 08-11-2008 03:35 PM

Hmmmm not a bad idea at all but then we have to decide who does what forum/compilation etc

right-track 08-11-2008 03:36 PM

Members can put their names forward and we'll decide between us?

jackhammer 08-11-2008 03:44 PM

More polls then? ;) tis a good idea though.

PMO has his hands full with the hall of fame thread I think RT could organise this the best ;)

No, not necessarily.
If someone wants to do a genre, then they can put themselves forward in here.
If more than one wants to do it, they can always collaborate via pm's for ideas and proof reading...

Piss Me Off 08-11-2008 03:49 PM

In terms of compilations then there's members who have expertise in some genres (boo boo with prog, jackhammer with metal) so they could review over the ones there, with the broader ones like Indie and Rock then everyone can just work together.

Also i wouldn't say my hands are too full, i'd be happy to chip in where needed.
Comp wise though i'm thinking we'll need someone with a rapidshare account or whatever so the link stays open?
