Introductory Threads?

I've been noticing the music suggestion box has been growing with a lot of general suggestions, and there may be a solution to some of this. I was perusing the forums yesterday and came across the Jazz introductory thread, which I found to be a great tool to interpreting it as a genre. Perhaps all the genres should have introductory threads, as an accompanient to the normal education threads? It would be great if knowledgable people (i.e. not me) could take the oppotunity to introduce a genre by providing a list of notable albums to get a curious person to start listening. Maybe even provide a compilation or two to get things rolling.

I understand this is a very similar concept to the education threads that are so useful. But perhaps a thread to focus on particular albums and songs (rather than artists) might be helpful for people that want to start listening immediately.

Thoughts? Comments?

EDIT: Alright. As soon as people volunteer to cover the remaining genres, I'll have the layout up and a deadline for submission. ANYONE WHO WISHES TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION MUST VOLUNTEER TO DO SO BY AUGUST 21. This doesn't mean your thread has to be created by that time, just that you must declare your intention to create such a thread by that time. Here's the volunteers so far:

Punk : Alfred (need someone to help)
Hardcore & Emo : CAPTAIN CAVEMAN
Rock & Metal : jackhammer
Prog & Classic Rock : JayJamJah (Classic Rock) Seltzer & ProggyMan (Prog)
Rap & Hip Hop : ProggyMan
Pop : sleepy jack
Reggae & Ska : bsmix (jackhammer as back up)
Indie : sweet_nothing
Jazz & Blues : Seltzer (Jazz)
Classical : Seltzer & Sasquatch
Electronica :
Country Folk : swim (need someone to help)
Avant Garde : ProggyMan
Soul & Funk : JayJamJah (Soul) littleknowitall (Funk)
Sountracks : UberFilmBuff

Anyone wishing to contribute to an already volunteered thread should submit their names anyways. In addition, anyone who wishes only to cover only a portion of the genre need not shy away.

EDIT II: I hate to do this, but I'm going to have to set up a preliminary deadline of August 21 for myself (and thus, everyone should volunteer contributions by then). I just can't handle moving into an apartment and going back to school with managing this at the same time.

SUPREME EDIT:

This will be the official template for any introductory thread. We need them as clean and orderly as possible to attract visitors. Please note that the thread title should be "The [Genre] Introductory Thread". You can quote my post and fill in where necessary to make it easier. Please understand that if you are covering more than one MAJOR genre (i.e. Rock & Metal), you can make an introductory thread for each, but leave the sub-genres within the thread. Everything within brackets should be deleted or deleted and substituted using the instructions shown.

The deadline for submission is October 1, 2008 (giving you a month and some change to create, edit, and change the thread as desired).

The [Genre] Introductory Thread

[Insert medium-sized (250 to 350 square pixels) image here of the album cover you feel best represents the genre.]

[Brief introduction: this is a small section where you can introduce the genre and explained how it came into being, but you should be concise and succinct. One to two paragraphs should be sufficient to introduce a genre and explain what the music sounds like. We don't want to saturate the introductory threads with words so that newbies don't shy away from using them.]

The Must-Haves: [Here follows a list of eight to ten albums which you feel best represent the genre as a whole.]

[Sub-Genre] [An opportunity to provide some notable sub-genres (but please, don't take it further than a sub-genre; we don't want to hear about blackened forest pixie metal). Use common sense! Three to five albums should suffice.]

Compilations: [Here you can exercise even more control by creating a playlist of eight to ten songs. You can archive them using WinZip and upload them using Megaupload, Mediafire or similar sites. If you want to, you can make multiple compilations or compilations for each sub-genre (though that would be a lot of work).]

I'm for it.

Piss Me Off 08-11-2008 03:18 PM

A good idea, the compilation idea especially sounds good. Going to be a bit tricky with the broader forums like the indie one, but people can argue over that.

jackhammer 08-11-2008 03:35 PM

Hmmmm not a bad idea at all but then we have to decide who does what forum/compilation etc

right-track 08-11-2008 03:36 PM

Members can put their names forward and we'll decide between us?

jackhammer 08-11-2008 03:44 PM

More polls then? ;) tis a good idea though.

PMO has his hands full with the hall of fame thread I think RT could organise this the best ;)

No, not necessarily.
If someone wants to do a genre, then they can put themselves forward in here.
If more than one wants to do it, they can always collaborate via pm's for ideas and proof reading...

Piss Me Off 08-11-2008 03:49 PM

In terms of compilations then there's members who have expertise in some genres (boo boo with prog, jackhammer with metal) so they could review over the ones there, with the broader ones like Indie and Rock then everyone can just work together.

Nicely volunteered Lee...unfortunately, I'm off to the Balearic's for two weeks this Wednesday.Attachment 2849

Piss Me Off 08-11-2008 03:53 PM

Also i wouldn't say my hands are too full, i'd be happy to chip in where needed.
Comp wise though i'm thinking we'll need someone with a rapidshare account or whatever so the link stays open?

jackhammer 08-11-2008 03:57 PM

Ok here's my suggestions:

Punk: swim or molecules
Rock & Metal: myself
Prog & Classic: booboo
Rap & Hip Hop: Lespaul43 or matious
Pop: ermm PMO?
Reggae & Ska: Muzak (or myself as back up)
Indie : Urbs
Jazz & Blues :Seltzer
Classical: Seltzer
Electronica: Expletive Deleted
Country Folk : Ethan
Avant Garde : CA
Soul & Funk : RT

I was thinking that too.

Maybe we can commandeer JayJamJah into doing soul/rnb. LesPaul43, matious and ProggyMan are both pretty knowledgable in rap & hip-hop, and I think ethan might be able to contribute something as well. Of course, I'm not speaking for anyone, just suggesting.

right-track 08-11-2008 03:58 PM

lucifer_sam...would you like to organise this?

Most sites have a one hundred day write off period so as long as the comps are d/l periodically then it is feasible.

I suppose I could...

What responsibilities would that entail?

Yeah i think Mediafire is quite flexible with that. Just in case keep a zip file on your computer which can be uploaded again when needed.

When it's been settled on who does what thread, set a completion time for submission.
Look at the Educational threads you mentioned for ideas on the layout of the future Introduction threads.
Decide on a format which other members can use, so they all look uniformed. Submit the format in here.
Use bold headlines, centred pics, colours etc...that kind of thing.

lucifer_sam 08-11-2008 04:24 PM

Alright. As soon as people volunteer to cover the remaining genres, I'll have the layout up and a deadline.

Here's the volunteers so far:

Punk :
Rock & Meta : jackhammer
Prog & Classic :
Rap & Hip Hop :
Pop :
Reggae & Ska : (jackhammer as back up)
Indie :
Jazz & Blues :
Classical :
Electronica:
Country Folk :
Avant Garde :
Soul & Funk :

I will edit the OP to reflect this as well. Anyone wishing to contribute to an already volunteered thread should submit their names anyways. In addition, anyone who wishes only to cover only a portion of the genre need not shy away.

sweet_nothing 08-11-2008 05:42 PM

I think you forgot hardcore&emo up there.

I could do Punk or Indie, either one.

Alfred 08-11-2008 07:43 PM

I'd work together on someone with a punk introduction thread. I'd also be willing to put together a compilation or two.

Pop-punk and skate-punk aren't all I listen to.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 08-11-2008 09:04 PM

i can do hardcore/emo

NSW 08-12-2008 11:39 AM

This is a great idea. I've been wanting to peruse different genres but I never know where to start, so I can't wait until y'all get this going.

Piss Me Off 08-12-2008 02:40 PM

I can't say i particularly 'specialise' in anything really, so when more people add themselves i'll just slot in where i can.

I'm sure I have heard these words uttered in an orgy before now ;). In all honesty I could do the same if we do'nt get many takers. I second captain caveman for Hardcore/Emo.

I was going to say 'fill in holes where i need to' but didn't for this reason :)

ProggyMan 08-12-2008 11:19 PM

I'll do Hip Hop.

lucifer_sam 08-12-2008 11:32 PM

I hate to do this, but I'm going to have to set up a preliminary deadline of August 21 for myself (and thus, everyone should volunteer contributions by then). I just can't handle moving into an apartment and going back to school with managing this at the same time.

Which also means I gotta finish other things before the summer sets...

ProggyMan 08-12-2008 11:47 PM

So it has to be finished by the 21st?

lucifer_sam 08-12-2008 11:55 PM

No, just that people have to volunteer to cover the remaining genres by then so that I can distribute the assigned format. It's more a timeline for myself anyway.

It would be a little unfair to ask you guys to finish them by then, and I think I can find time at school to help edit/proofread the ones that need it.

ProggyMan 08-13-2008 12:05 AM

Ok, cus that would be a rush job.

bsmix 08-13-2008 06:14 AM

oooo i'm down for a music orgy.. or for contributing to the reggae /ska part with muzak

Kevorkian Logic 08-13-2008 02:43 PM

Sigh, since rap is taken, which I would of loved to do, i'll bite the bullet and do pop since I'm sure no one wants to do it, and I since I was once a 12 year old girl more recently than most on this forum. I probably have a better handle on pop than most.

and don't expect it from me until after I have moved into my dorm room, which is the 16th. I'm pretty swamped until then.

lucifer_sam 08-13-2008 06:34 PM

I'll be proofreading them off a limited time scale too...

You can do rap too ya' know.

Kevorkian Logic 08-13-2008 07:22 PM

i'd like too, but I'd hate to be repetitive. Plus you said you'd do it first and I respect that.

ProggyMan 08-13-2008 07:50 PM

Collaborative dog, you have an aim?

Rap is pretty repetitive in itself. :P

But seriously, rap and hip-hop span about twenty-five years and encompass some very, very different styles. Still a bit of work to do for two people.

I'm starting to doubt whether it would be possible to do a classical introductory thread. It would be condensing five hundred years of written and recorded works into a few short paragraphs, and I dunno if anyone here is that well-versed in classical music to begin with. Maybe booboo, but his allusions to it could be smoke and mirrors...

Alfred 08-13-2008 08:27 PM

Anyone else wanna do punk with me? I don't want to do it all by myself.

Also, how do you want these laid out? Should we have a set of reccommendations/key albums for each subgenre/scene?

ProggyMan 08-13-2008 08:37 PM

I can help out with the following if needed:
Prog
Avant Garde

Son of JayJamJah 08-13-2008 08:40 PM

I like the idea, I'll help with any of the genres let me know what you need Lucifer Sam.
