Public Referendum On The Future Of MusicBanter

Should the Name That Tune forum be scrapped ?

Vote & Offer your opinions here

Janszoon 12-17-2008 04:30 PM

No. If it gets scrapped all those posts will pollute the rest of the site. I think it's best to have a containment area for them.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-17-2008 04:31 PM

They can all be put in one thread rather than have a whole forum dedicated to them.

sleepy jack 12-17-2008 04:32 PM

Yes, I've been hear over four years and the forum doesn't do anything remotely productive. Besides if its gone there won't be a giant influx of those sort of threads, they search for a "name that tune" type forum in google and it pops up thats the problem.

Akira 12-17-2008 04:33 PM

Maybe, but I typed in 'need help naming tune' into Google and came up 7th. Most requests are from people who just pop on to find out a song and then leave. it wouldn't be bad if it were regulars using it but none do.

I think it indirectly attracts non-beneficial traffic.

FaSho 12-17-2008 04:34 PM

It doesn't need to be here. People join just to ask about the new t-pain song and then never contribute again.

Alfred 12-17-2008 04:35 PM

Yeah, I never see regular members posting in that forum. I agree that

It doesn't even need it's own thread. 9/10 times if you google the lyric you know the song will show up.

yes. who cares if it's regulars or noobs who use it and if it's just for the newest club single. better to have it all in one spot.

my biggest complaint with that subforum is the broken link issue. so many of the threads are just 'what's the song in this video?'. no mention of style, when it was recorded, lyrical content, etc. personally i'm not interested in piecing together a broken link to check out some socio-political BS with some whiny frat boy acoustic drek. but i don't mind trying to help people out if they can offer a little more information about what they're looking for.

is there a way to make that forum somehow immune to the 15 post minimum prior to posting a link?

I think having a forum dedicated to it makes for a very obvious and noticeable place for people that just joined to post those questions. With just a thread I think they'll be more likely to post in the wrong places, meaning more work for the mods.

Also, do we really want yet another stickied thread clogging up the the top of the General Music forum?

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-17-2008 04:48 PM

They already post in the wrong forums.

About 75% of the posts in the name that tune forum are put in there by mods anyway

I bet they'd do it even more without that forum though.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-17-2008 04:50 PM

But as has already been said. Having that forum there brings more in.

right-track 12-17-2008 04:52 PM

I never realised that 'Name That Tune' had an entire sub-forum dedicated to it.
That's ridiculous!

I'm for a stickied thread in general instead.

Also, I think this referendum should be about what the sub-forum could be better used for.

Well, that's definitely the best argument so far. But I still think we should keep it. :p:

Maybe in the Lounge then?

Seems like most people are posting in the wrong forum anyway. Give it the boot.

simplephysics 12-17-2008 08:23 PM

might as well keep it.

Son of JayJamJah 12-17-2008 09:32 PM

To hell with it

Bulldog 12-18-2008 09:41 AM

Give it the chop I say

Alfred 12-18-2008 09:46 AM

Hear! Hear!

Piss Me Off 12-18-2008 09:55 AM

It bothers me very little. I've helped some people out in there but apart from the odd thread-moving i never cross it. I don't think a thread dedicated to Name That Tune would be as efficient as it seems, i'd say leave it.

swim 12-21-2008 03:40 PM

I think it does more harm than good.

Son of JayJamJah 12-21-2008 10:21 PM

What this poll shows is that people are generally apathetic towards it and removing it would hurt no regulars feelings.

simplephysics 12-22-2008 03:19 PM

I'm just assuming all the people who sign up here only to figure out what song they heard in a movie or whatever will only post their requests in General Music or someplace else, pissing everyone off further. At least having a seprate category contains them to one place.

They already do that anyway , most of the posts in that forum have been moved into there by us. Having that forum just brings in more people asking.

right-track 12-22-2008 03:53 PM

There's only one way to find out.
Temporarily close the forum and see how it goes.
After it becomes obvious that it either does, or doesn't work out then we decide what to do with the sub forum.
Reopen it, or use it for something else...

people with brains know how to find what they're looking for without enlisting the help of an entire music forum.

cut the fucking thing.

Seltzer 12-29-2008 07:33 PM

When I was moderating a couple of years worth of MB linkbacks, I noticed that there were a fair few from people recommending MB in response to song finding questions on Yahoo Answers.

So I think we'll still get a fair bit of song finding traffic even if the Name That Tune forum is removed.

Comus 01-04-2009 09:35 PM

That's pretty cool tbh, the traffic is nice, becuase for every 100 that don't come back if even one stays and becomes a valid poster we've achieved something.

I like the forum and usually check it every day, haven't known any songs yet to my knowledge though.

If it has the power to bring attention or advertising to the forum in future then I'm for it. Plus it's good for when I've got stray lyrics stuck in my head and just don't feel like using the google toolbar :p

If we're gonna scram it, atleast think of something usefull to outsiders to replace it. Organise something to offer to people who join.

thats the biggest thing.

Even if we made the forum into a game or something, Google ruins it because you can just type in three words and find a damn song. It was created to help folks, but they can just as easily ask in the chat room at the bottom.

littleknowitall 01-27-2009 11:27 AM

Still, It encourages people to join I assume and google doesn't always find what your looking for.

Sneer 01-27-2009 11:29 AM

Yet it encourages people who literally want the name of a song and nothing else to do with the site.
