MB Forum Functions You Never Knew Existed

Or maybe you did, but this is for the benefit of those who didn't.

  • View first new post in thread - You ever noticed those little http://www.musicbanter.com/images/buttons/firstnew.gif icons to the immediate left of every thread containing unread posts? If you click it, it will take you to your first unread post in the thread. This will save you from having to trawl through posts to find where you left off.
  • View first new post on current page - There is a link at the top left corner of each page in a thread: View First Unread. This will bring you to the first unread post on that specific page. This is especially useful if you have your settings set up so that a large number of posts are displayed per thread.
  • WYSIWYG editor - At the top right of all reply boxes, there's a white http://www.musicbanter.com/images/editor/switchmode.gif icon. This switch toggles editing modes. WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get, and having WYSIWYG mode on allows you to see the post exactly as it will be displayed in the thread, while you're creating it. The forum default is not WYSIWYG mode, but you can make this mode your default mode for posts by specifying it in your settings, which can be found through your User CP link.
  • Flexible multi-quoting - To multi-quote (quote more than one post in one reply), you can use the multi-quote button: http://www.musicbanter.com/images/bu...iquote_off.gif located to the immediate right of the standard quote button in the bottom right of every post. You simply click the button for each post you want to quote. The buttons will become red. The important part about this is that if you want the quotes to appear in a specific order, you must click the multi-quote buttons in the order you wish them to appear in your reply. After you have done this, simply click the "Quote" http://www.musicbanter.com/images/buttons/quote.gif button on any of the selected posts, and your reply will contain the quotes in the order you chose. This is an extremely convenient way to quote other posts without having to do it manually.
  • Who posted? - While viewing a forum, if you click on the number of replies to a thread, a box will pop up listing everyone who posted in the thread and how many posts they made. If you then click on the number of posts a specific user made in the thread, you will be taken to a list of all that member's posts in the thread.
  • Searching for threads, the right way - If you find yourself needing to search for a thread, using the search box without doing an advanced search is highly likely to be frustrating. For everyone. When searching for threads, use the Advanced Search link you see when you click "Search" at the top of the forums, then in "Search by keyword", type your keyword(s) in the box, then in the drop-down select SEARCH TITLES ONLY. This will only return results containing the keyword(s) in thread titles only, and make your search a lot faster, more precise, and a lot less frustrating. For everyone.
  • Searching for threads, the Google way - You can also search for MB threads via Google. Just type your keywords into the search bar and use the word Musicbanter in the query. This is often a fast way for general searches if you don't fancy messing around in the forum search feature, but your results may vary.

I had figured everything else out on my own but I did not know about the WYSIWYG thing. Cool, thanks!

you expect people who would look at a busy music forum and think 'geez, i need to start an OFFICIAL Ramones (or Beatles) thread here, i must be the first person to ever visit with enough knowledge about these bands to make one' is actually going to look at instructions on how to search?

the rest is awesome though.

Definitely not. But now we have a single link/photo to reply to such threads instead of searching for all of it ourselves like a bunch of slaves.

"Give a man a match, he'll be warm for an hour. Light a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."

Your pictures with simple explanations are very nice, Freebase. The little circle dots on the i's are friendly and cute.

Snort! I've never heard that version of the old "give a man a fish" saying before. That must be some big match, though, to last for an hour! I'd say, "Give a man a match, he'll be warm for a minute." Unless he's an arsonist, in which case he could get quite a blaze going!
