When Someone is Banned

I've seen mods ban someone for 5 minutes as a joke, so what's with the 1 day minimum? What are the qualifications time wise for each of the bannings?

That's called banning someone for whatever time frame, and unbanning them a minute later.

The one day minimum is simply the preset option that's available to us.
Again, there are no qualifications for banning time, other than simply what the moderators agree on and decide to select from the preset list.

Can you ban someone from specific parts of the site, or just MB in general? (sorry to play 20 questions)

Bans only apply to MB in general. You can still view the site, but you cannot log in.

I'm not sure which post you're referring to or when it was posted/deleted, but I can say that the mods are currently in the process of hammering out what constitutes a deletable post, among a lot of other things, and that everyone should hang in there until we're all able to do things a bit more consistently.

Once you cool down from being banned and get your head on straight, there's nothing that you can really do but wait it out. You can make an auxilliary account to post in the meantime, but that's a bad idea, as multiple accounts are forbidden. Getting unbanned is a dual-edged sword though.
