I think we're more of a commune than a community though. We pay our dues the old fashioned way. I'd be glad to chip in, but a membership fee is a bad idea.

I love this idea, but the post count needed for access should definitely be higher, probably around 500-1000 with of course, moderator's approval. I'm for it if it ever comes to fruition.

There's honestly nothing about this idea I don't like, and with the current technology on the forum it might be possible now.

How would infractions impact a member's membership in said Member's only membershipdom?

Yeah, not something everybody would go for... but it would be a good idea for some.

The real reason why we had to do it though was to avoid a ton of cencorship we were getting. Before the subscription came in, it all came down to advertisers and sponsers and the like... who even if you made an even slightly racy comment, threated to drop out... and some did, and all of a sudden the admin was left with the option of either shutting the board down entirely because he could not pay the monthly costs to run the site alone, or he could accept donations to pay for the bandwidth and all that that comes with running a site.. hell, even refreshing the page costs money. So that is why it happened, it allowed the users more freedom they would not of had without sacrificing a certain amount of freedom of speech.

There were still rules, no posting anything pornographic or hate material, it is not like it turned into just a do whatever you want, moderation still came into play... but it didn't prohibit people on the board from being afraid to do so either... could post racy stuff, so long as it has a NSFW or something to go with it...

That is more how it came into play.... lose your entire community or help pay for the costs of running the site. You had the options of spending the 8.50 or 17.00, or even $2 at a time, whatever you could... to allow members freedom, since advertisers would drop out and that would be all. So it had its reasoning behind it as well. Also you could spend $1 and get a name change credit, which allowed users to change it one time (or is it a month, not sure forget, never bought the credits), or if you bought the 6 or 1 year, you got unlimited name change credits as well as the double sized avatar, unlimited store for mail and other things.

Not that I see this site having that same problem... or else I am just a noob who doesn't see it... but good route to go sometimes, but not always.

If it came down to a donation to save the site, of course I'll pitch in. Also, I'm okay with premium meberships if they are worthwhile.

I have no problem with a donation, membership..whatever? If its to improve the MB forum.
