Promotion Corner??

I'd like to discuss and exchange ideas about promotion and buzz generation for bands... where can I do that? I've been searching for a place on MusicBanter, but I can't find anything... then again, I might be selectively blind.

VEGANGELICA 01-26-2012 07:16 AM

You're not selectively blind, Trick...

MusicBanter doesn't have any official place to promote and generate buzz for bands.

As best I can tell from the things moderators have said to people over the years, the reason is that allowing promotion would cause MusicBanter to be overrun with people who just post their advertisement (for someone else's band or their own) and then leave, without ever becoming a part of the community.

However, I did create a thread that allows people to post about new, lesser-known bands:

If you want to find a forum that welcomes promotion, then I recommend MuzicForums because they have a section for this. I wish MusicBanter were more welcoming toward musicians, because I feel that allowing music promotion in a designated spot does not diminish the quality of an online music community and actually serves to strengthen it. Thanks for asking your question.

yeah i agree with VEGANGELICA about Muzic Forums

but be warned, the promotion thread there is under scrutiny by a lot of hardened well-worn musicians so expect some really rough criticism on your recordings

be forewarned

A warning? :) ^ This is exactly what I think an up-and-coming musician would want from a forum! You just gave MuzicForums the best promotion possible, Duce! :p: (Plus, they have the games!)

I actually haven't looked at MuzicForums' promotion section, other than to note it exists, but I do know that at least one of the MuzicForums moderators is a professional musician who earns his living playing and teaching music, which I learned from my conversations with him. He's very knowledgeable about music.

EDIT: Okay, I just took a look at the MuzicForums website and read this about their promotion section:

"Forum Title: Promotional Material
Forum Description: Promote your band, music website, or anything related to music. No spamming please!
Sub-Forums: Promote Your Bands Myspace, Articles, News, Concert Information"

Surprisingly, there actually doesn't seem to be a lot of activity in this section of MuzicForums' site. For example, most of the promotional threads that people started on the first page have only 15 views and no replies/comments. And the thread designated "Promote Your Bands Myspace" currently only has 481 threads and 920 posts.

So this shows what happens when you have a bunch of people together each of whom wants to promote herself or himself: not much conversation!

Yet it also shows that allowing promotion of bands on a forum doesn't seem to cause a massive influx of musicians aimed at self-promotion. Of course, MuzicForums is a smaller forum than MusicBanter; if *we* had a promotion section, perhaps more musicians and those who want to promote bands would flock here, drawn by the lure of our small horde of devoted music listeners.

several of them are quite knowledgeable about music and have degrees and such, as our Rubato here (formerly from there)

I'm curious whether our members who were (or are) MuzicForums members feel that MuzicForums was harmed by having a Promotion forum. I haven't been there often enough to notice any negative effect, especially since the interpersonal troubles within that community (not related to music promotion) were much more noticeable at the time.

Howard the Duck 01-26-2012 09:15 AM

it was much busier when i first joined them

nowadays most of them are pretty slack and the most activity is in the word games section

most of the threads' replies are often days or even weeks old

People who join, and stay to become members of the community are more than welcome to share their work with us, but Music Banter does not serve as a dumping ground.

From what I've seen of past posts, I think there was a promotional forum in the past that has since been removed, though I can't tell you why it was or how well it functioned while it was available.

Just come get to know us, and interest in your work will come with time.

Number of years this site had a promotions forum - 5

Number of members that used it that stuck around afterwards - 0

That's why we got rid of it and don't currently have one.
