I've noticed over the years that I'm a horrible friend therapist. I find it hard to empathize with the problems that my friends tell me, and therefore find it difficult to give them actual advice that I'm proud of giving. Sometimes I've given poignant advice but I find it happens less often than not. Am I a sociopath?

I think a lot of people struggle with finding the "right" thing to say and end up staying silent when in actuality the most helpful thing is usually just listening and empathizing. Just like any therapist you're job isn't to solve their problems, but rather to listen and offer validation. When I go to a friend to vent I'm not looking for solutions, I'm looking for solidarity and the reminder that I'm cared for.

My mom has never understood this so I can never talk to her about anything. She always wants to solve the problem. Sometimes I just wanna vent about my day. I tend to go to my dad since he actually listens.

I try to do both. I actively listen but I also feel that when my perspective could offer some insight, that I should give it up and try to make the situation better. Nothing wrong with trying to solve problems sometimes.

Yeah

I guess itís case by case what people want but if I explain a problem to someone itís because Iím interested in what they think my best course of action is. Sometimes itís pointless because there is no solution. In those situations I tell my dog who usually suggests I give her some treats to help get my mind off my woes.

I totally agree. I'm more than happy to take that kind of advice from friends etc. I know my mom means well. But my mom has a completely different lifestyle than I do so she tells me things that she'd do when it has almost nothing to do with the issues I vent about. Just listening is enough.
