what do you count as spam? I thought spam was basically for the purpose of advertising.

Well, spam usually IS advertising but spam can also be used when somebody floods the boards with posts that don't really have any substance. Forced exposure sort of thing. Spam isn't annoying because they're ads. They're annoying because there's usually a large quantity of them in a short amount of time.
